Barbie, Greta Gerwig’s summer blockbuster rival, received five nominations, while the drama received thirteen total, including best picture, director, adapted screenplay, and leading actor for Cillian Murphy.
British director Christopher Nolan’s biopic follows the life and work of American theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, who is known as the “father of the atomic bomb” for his contributions to the creation of the first nuclear weapons used in conflict.
The critically praised film features Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, and Robert Downey Jr. as heavy favorites to win Best Picture at both the Academy Awards and the Baftas because of his previous success at the Golden Globes.

What is ‘Oppenheimer’ about?
From his time at Cambridge University until his tenure as a professor at Berkeley University, the life and work of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) are chronicled in this biopic by Christopher Nolan. Upon learning about nuclear fission in 1938, Oppenheimer immediately thought of ways to use it as a weapon to hasten the end of World War II.
Oppenheimer and his team of scientists spent years in the desert, constructing and creating the atomic bomb, after being selected to work on the top-secret Manhattan Project by Lt Gen Leslie Groves Jr. (Matt Damon).
Three years of labor led to the first nuclear explosion in history, and Oppenheimer struggled to come to terms with his part in altering the course of history.
