Microsoft lntroduce AI that Noted Everything You do on Your Device
Microsoft is rolling out a new AI system that will keep an eye on what its users do on their computers.
The method is meant to let users remember what they have seen or done on their PC, like having a “photographic memory.” It will also be able to tell what the user wants to do next.
Microsoft pushed “Windows Recall” as a way to make its AI tools better. It said that it lets users “access virtually what you have seen or done on your PC in a way that feels like having photographic memory.”
It can lead users to worry about their safety, though, because of the information it collects. People would be able to pick what information the company collects and how much it collects, the company said.
The company showed off a bunch of new features and goods at its “Build” conference this week. A lot of those features were meant to add AI tools to Windows so that it would be faster and easier to create new papers and find things.
The conference comes after big AI news from Microsoft’s close business partner OpenAI and its competitor Google last week. OpenAI built the AI large language models that Microsoft’s Copilot is based on.
Google updated its search engine so that sometimes AI-generated summaries appear above website links at the top of the results page. They also showed off Astra, an AI helper that is still being developed but will be able to “see” and talk about things seen through a smartphone camera.
OpenAI, the company that makes ChatGPT, showed off a new version of its chatbot last week. It is an AI voice helper that looks and acts like a person and can talk about what someone is wearing and even try to figure out how someone is feeling. OpenAI took the voice off its library on Monday because it sounded too much like Scarlett Johansson as an AI character in the sci-fi movie “Her.”
OpenAI also released a new version of ChatGPT for Mac computers that can be used on the desktop.
Next up is Apple’s own developer’s meeting, which happens every year in June. Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, hinted at the company’s annual meeting of shareholders in February that the company has been putting a lot of money into creative AI.
Some of the things Microsoft said on Monday seemed like they were meant to stop what Apple had planned. The new Windows PCs with AI will be available on computers made by Microsoft partners Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Samsung starting June 18. They will also be available on Microsoft’s Surface line of devices. But only high-end models starting at $999 will be able to get them.
