Baby Milk Formula is More Expensive than Ever Before
The price of baby milk formula has gone up by 25% in the last two years, according to Britain’s market watchdog.
Because of what they found in their first review of the formula delivery market last November, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has now started a market study into it.
It was said in the fall of 2017 that only two companies made up 85% of the baby formula business, making it very concentrated.
The CMA found that over two years, the average price of baby formula increased by a quarter. This meant that a few parents moved brands as prices went up.
The market study will try to find out how people act in the market, what part regulations play, and things about the formula market, like how hard it is to get into and how easy it is to grow.
The CMA is going to make its last report in September.
Should it determine that there are issues in the market, it may propose new regulations regarding the marketing of formulas or the information provided to parents in order to assist them in selecting formula labels.
Sarah Cardell, chief executive officer of the CMA, stated, “Although the fact that prices of some products have decreased since our November update is a positive indicator, baby milk continues to be priced at an all-time high.
We are worried that parents don’t always have enough information to make good decisions and that suppliers might not have strong reasons to offer infant formula at low prices.
We want to make sure this market works well for the many new parents who depend on it, and any changes we suggest must be based on facts and a deep understanding of the market.”
